Ever wondered how much it really costs to keep a multi-cat household running? The UK average spend per cat sits right around £96.50 ($129). Since we have three of them, we decided to track every single receipt for a month to see exactly where we land.
Spoiler alert: Our “three tiny dictators” are officially out-spending the average. Here is the exact monthly receipt breakdown.
The Monthly Receipt Breakdown
1. Food: £150 ($200)
Our cats have officially unionised, demanding a strict schedule of 3 meals a day. To keep them happy, we feed them a high-quality mix of raw, wet, and a little bit of dry food.
2. Insurance: £112 ($150)
Apparently, being a male cat in London is an expensive demographic.
Interesting Fact: Premium rates heavily depend on breed, age, postcode, and your desired coverage levels – but biological sex plays a role too, with males costing more to insure.
3. Treats: £50 ($65)
It looks like a massive haul, but Rabbitowitz firmly considers this the “bare minimum”. Our monthly restock includes:
- 1 box of freeze-dried treats
- A few small packs of Dreamies
- A few packs of meat sticks
- 1 box of creamy lickable treats
4. Litter: £25 ($33)
We currently opt for tofu litter. It’s a bit of a premium choice, but it’s completely worth it because it absolutely does not track across the floorboards.
5. Health Supplements: £9 ($12)
Consistency is key here. Munchie (aka Rabbitowitz) takes specialized supplements for urinary health every single night. Honestly, he’s significantly more consistent with his nighttime routine than we are with ours.
The Final Bill
| Category | Cost (GBP) | Cost (USD) |
| Food | £150 | $200 |
| Insurance | £112 | $150 |
| Treats | £50 | $65 |
| Litter | £25 | $33 |
| Supplements | £9 | $12 |
| Total | £346 | $465 |
In total, maintaining our trio costs us £115 ($154) per cat, per month. Comparing that to the UK baseline of £96.50, the London premium and a focus on high-quality care definitely push the numbers up.
